Weekly Update - 10/16/26

Happy Friday! Here’s this week’s Market Weekly with the latest on the market.

Mortgage rates had a surprisingly strong week, ending noticeably lower despite hotter-than-expected inflation and rising oil prices. Investors moved money out of riskier tech stocks and into safer investments like bonds, helping push rates down. September inflation rose 0.6% from August and was 3.7% higher than a year ago, while core inflation increased 2.6%. Producer prices also jumped more than expected, and consumer spending remained strong, rising 0.8% in September. Looking ahead, mortgage rates are likely to remain volatile as investors watch inflation, Fed comments, economic reports, and oil prices tied to the conflict in the Middle East.

Looking ahead, the focus will stay on the Middle East conflict and oil prices. It should be a lighter week for economic data. The NAHB Housing Index comes out Monday and Housing Starts on Tuesday, and we’ll see how those releases influence mortgage rates.
