Weekly Update - 10/9/26
Happy Friday! Here’s your weekly look at what’s happening in the mortgage market and the economy.
Mortgage markets had another volatile week as oil prices and economic news kept investors on edge. Rates hit their highest levels in nearly three years before easing back to finish close to where they started. Fed officials remain divided on inflation and future rate decisions, with investors increasingly expecting a possible rate hike in December. Higher mortgage rates have also slowed both home purchase and refinance activity. Bottom Line: Inflation, slower economic growth, and global uncertainty could keep mortgage rates volatile in the weeks ahead.
Looking ahead, markets will continue to watch the conflict in the Middle East and changes in oil prices, which can affect mortgage rates. Next week, Existing Home Sales will be released Tuesday, giving us an update on the housing market. On Wednesday, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will show how prices for everyday goods and services are changing, helping investors track inflation. Thursday brings the Producer Price Index (PPI), which tracks price changes for businesses, along with Retail Sales, which gives us a look at consumer spending. Mortgage markets will be closed Monday for Columbus Day.
